Marist at New Haven

This is Missed It. Marist at New Haven, Friday, August 28, with the Red Foxes. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

First Blood, Then a Punch in the Gut

We open this one scoreless, and it stays that way through the early exchanges. Yuska pins them deep, Quigley answers with a 38-yard field goal, and we're trading punts like boxers feeling each other out. Then Mannino takes it himself, five yards up the middle, and we've got the lead. Stenson's kick is true. Seven to three, and the sideline is alive. But football turns on a dime. Duffy drops back, and Caldwell steps in front of it. He picks it off at the 25 and takes it all the way back. Just like that, the lead flips. Fourteen to three, and the air goes out of the building.

The Block That Changed Everything

We need an answer, and we get one. Duffy hits Glaudin for 39 yards, and suddenly it's a one-score game again. Fourteen to ten, and we're right back in it. The defense holds, the punt pins them at the eight, and we're feeling good about the half. Then it happens. The punt is blocked. Garmont scoops it up and walks in from zero yards out. Twenty-one to ten, and it's not even halftime. That one stings. That one stays with you.

The Comeback Starts to Breathe

Quigley adds another field goal, this one from 35, and it's twenty-one to thirteen. We're clawing, but every drive seems to stall. We get the ball back, we push, and then Mannino is stopped short on fourth down. Turnover on downs. The chance slips away. But Duffy throws one too many. Burleson II hauls in a 46-yard pass, and the two-point try fails. Twenty-one to nineteen. We're within a field goal, and the fourth quarter is ours for the taking.

The Final Stand Falls Short

Quigley lines up from 41 and pushes it wide. The door is open. We take over, but the drive stalls, and we punt it away. Then New Haven grinds it out. Twelve plays, all the way down to our doorstep, and Quigley makes no mistake from 19 yards out. Twenty-two to twenty-one. They've got the lead with four minutes to play. We get one last chance. Mannino drops back, looks deep for Garmont, and the pass falls incomplete. Turnover on downs. The clock is our enemy now. Duffy kneels it out, and that's the ball game. Twenty-two to twenty-one. One point. That's the whole season in a number. We had our chances. We just couldn't take them.

Marist at New Haven

This is Missed It. Marist at New Haven, Friday, August 28, with the Chargers. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

First Blood, Then a Gut Punch

We open this one trading punts, feeling each other out. Quigley puts us on the board first, a 38-yard field goal, and it's 3 to 0. Then Marist answers. Mannino takes it himself, five yards up the middle, and just like that they've got seven. 7 to 3, and we're chasing. Then the bottom drops out. We're driving, Laney picks up five to the 25. Duffy drops back. He lets it go. Caldwell steps in front of it at the 25, and he's gone. Twenty-five yards to the house. Just like that, we're down 14 to 3. The air goes out of the place. We gave them seven, and we gave them the ball back.

The Fight Back

We needed an answer, and we got one. Duffy finds Glaudin for 39 yards, and it's a touchdown. Quigley adds the point, and it's 14 to 10. We're breathing again. Then the special teams unit changes everything. They block the punt. Garmont falls on it in the end zone. Touchdown. We take the lead, 21 to 10. The place is rocking. We've flipped this game completely on its head.

They Keep Coming

Marist isn't going away. They answer right back with a 35-yard field goal from Quigley's counterpart. 21 to 13. Then Duffy hits Burleson II for 46 yards and another score. We go for two and don't get it. 21 to 19. We've got the lead, but it's a one-score game, and every possession feels like it matters.

Nail-Biter Finish

We have a chance to stretch it. Quigley lines up from 41 yards out. It's no good. We leave points on the board, and the tension ratchets up another notch. We get another shot. This drive is a grind. Twelve plays. We chew the clock. And then Quigley gets his redemption, a 19-yard field goal. 22 to 21. One point. That's the margin. Marist gets the ball back with a chance to win it. They push it to our 40. Mannino drops back, he's looking deep for Garmont, but Briggs gets home. The pass falls incomplete. Turnover on downs. Our ball. Duffy finds Grguric for 12 yards to the 21, and that's the one that seals it. We take a knee. The clock hits zero. New Haven 22, Marist 21. We win by one.
