Nothing doing. Then the bottom of the first. Two outs, Isaac Paredes on base. Jose Altuve steps in. The pitch. Altuve homers to left field. Paredes scores. Just like that, it’s 2 to 0 Houston. Daulton Varsho grounds out to end it, but the damage is done.
Top 2 – We Answer Back
We don’t flinch. Top of the second, one out, Colson Montgomery on. Chase Meidroth singles on a soft ground ball to pitcher Hunter Brown. Montgomery moves to second. Then two outs, two on. Jake Rogers singles to shortstop Jeremy Peña. Montgomery scores. Tristan Peters to second. It’s 2 to 1. Still two outs, two on. Sam Antonacci singles to left fielder LaMonte Wade Jr. Peters scores. Rogers to third. Tie game, 2 to 2. Munetaka Murakami strikes out swinging, but we’ve clawed it back. Bottom of the second, three batters, no runs. Yainer Diaz grounds out. We’re even.
Bot 3 – The Bottom Drops Out
Top of the third, five batters, no runs. Chase Meidroth strikes out swinging with two outs and two on. We leave them stranded. That one stings. Bottom of the third. One out, two on. Isaac Paredes doubles to left fielder Sam Antonacci. LaMonte Wade Jr. scores. Yordan Alvarez to third. 2 to 3. Then two outs, two on. Daulton Varsho triples sharply to center fielder Tristan Peters. We're scoreless in the bottom of the first, two outs, and Isaac Paredes is standing on first base. Jose Altuve digs in. The pitch comes, and Altuve gets all of it, a fly ball to left field that just keeps carrying. It's gone. Altuve homers, Paredes scores, and just like that we're up 2 to 0. The crowd is on its feet. Daulton Varsho grounds out to end the inning, but we've drawn first blood.
The Sox Answer Back
Top of the second, and Chicago isn't going away quietly. One out, a runner on, and Chase Meidroth drops a soft ground ball to the pitcher, Hunter Brown. Colson Montgomery moves to second. Then, with two outs and two on, Jake Rogers grounds one to short. Jeremy Peña can't do anything with it. Montgomery scores, Tristan Peters moves to second, and it's 2 to 1. The Sox keep coming. Sam Antonacci grounds one to left field, LaMonte Wade Jr. has to chase it down. Peters scores, Rogers moves to third, and just like that it's tied at 2 to 2. Munetaka Murakami strikes out swinging to end the threat, but the damage is done. We're knotted up heading to the bottom of the second, and we go down in order.
The Bottom of the Third Explodes
Top of the third, two outs, two on, and Chase Meidroth strikes out swinging. We escape. Now it's our turn. Bottom of the third, one out, two on. LaMonte Wade Jr. is on third, Yordan Alvarez on second. Isaac Paredes steps in and rips a double to left field. Wade Jr. scores, Alvarez moves to third, and we're back on top, 3 to 2. Then, with two outs and two on, Daulton Varsho unloads. A sharp fly ball to center field, and it's deep. Tristan Peters can't get there. Varsho triples, Alvarez scores, Paredes scores, and it's 5 to 2. The place is rocking. Christian Walker follows with a line drive to center. Varsho scores. 6 to 2. Taylor Trammell pops out in foul territory to end the inning, but we've blown this game wide open.
The Calm After the Storm
The next few innings are quiet. Top of the fourth, three batters, no runs. Bottom of the fourth, we get two on with two outs, but Isaac Paredes flies out to left. Top of the fifth, three batters, no runs. Bottom of the fifth, two on, two outs, but Yainer Diaz flies out sharply to right. Top of the sixth, Chase Meidroth strikes out swinging. Bottom of the sixth, Yordan Alvarez grounds out. We're holding at 6 to 2, and the pitching is doing its job.
Closing It Out
Top of the seventh, and there's a bit of drama. Yainer Diaz challenges a pitch result, and the call on the field is overturned. Sam Antonacci is called out on strikes. Three up, three down. We go quietly in the bottom of the seventh. Top of the eighth, Andrew Benintendi is called out on strikes. Bottom of the eighth, Cam Smith pops out in foul territory. Now it's the top of the ninth. Two outs, a runner on, and Randal Grichuk strikes out swinging. That's the ballgame. We win it, 6 to 2.
