Then the bottom of the first gets away from us. The Pirates load the bases with one out, and Oneil Cruz works a walk. Spencer Horwitz trots home. 1 to 0 Pittsburgh. Still loaded, still one out, and Jake Mangum gets hit by the pitch. Bryan Reynolds scores. 2 to 0. The bases stay loaded, but Jacob Gonzalez is called out on strikes, and we escape further damage. Down two after one.

The Middle Innings Grind

We can't get anything going. Nate Furman grounds out with a runner on in the second. Bryce Eldridge does the same in the third. Andrew Knizner flies out in the fourth. Christian Koss lines out in the fifth. Quiet half-innings, one after another. The Pirates aren't doing much either. Brandon Lowe flies out in the second. Rafael Flores Jr. flies out in the third. Spencer Horwitz lines out in the fourth. Then in the fifth, Nick Gonzales grounds into a double play, and we're out of the inning. Still 2 to 0, Pittsburgh, and we're running out of time.

The Breakthrough and the Break

Bryce Eldridge strikes out swinging to end our sixth, and then the bottom half hurts. Jake Mangum lays down a sacrifice bunt, and the throw from Reiver Sanmartin gets away. Oneil Cruz scores. 3 to 0. Then Jared Triolo grounds into a force out, but Jake Mangum scores on the play. 4 to 0. Spencer Horwitz flies out, but the damage is done. But we don't quit. Top of the seventh, two on, no outs, and Jung Hoo Lee doubles down the line. Jonah Cox scores. Turner Hill to third. 4 to 1. Then Nate Furman grounds out, but Turner Hill scores. Jung Hoo Lee to third. 4 to 2. Christian Koss lines out, and we leave one stranded, but we're back in this ballgame. The Pirates go quietly in the bottom half. Oneil Cruz is called out on strikes with a runner on, and we head to the eighth down two.

The Final Push Falls Short

Bryce Eldridge lines out to left in the eighth, and we can't scratch anything across. Then Pittsburgh adds on. Jared Triolo hits a sacrifice fly to center, Jake Mangum scores. 5 to 2. Spencer Horwitz lines out, but the lead is three. Top of the ninth. Three batters, no runs. Jung Hoo Lee grounds out to first, and that's the ballgame. Final score: San Francisco Giants 2, Pittsburgh Pirates 5. We fought back in the seventh, but the early damage and that eighth-inning run were too much to overcome. We head home with a loss.

The Giants Strike Back

The Giants finally answer in the top of the seventh. With two on and no outs, Jung Hoo Lee doubles down the line. Jonah Cox scores. Turner Hill to third. It is 4 to 1, Pirates. Nate Furman grounds out, but Turner Hill scores. Jung Hoo Lee to third. It is 4 to 2, Pirates. The lead is shrinking. Christian Koss lines out to end the inning, but the Giants are back in this ballgame. The Pirates go quietly in the bottom of the seventh. Oneil Cruz strikes out looking. Still 4 to 2.

Closing It Out

The Giants go down in order in the top of the eighth. Bryce Eldridge lines out. Now the Pirates need insurance. With one out and two on, Jared Triolo hits a sacrifice fly to center. Jake Mangum scores. It is 5 to 2, Pirates. That is a huge run. Spencer Horwitz lines out to end the inning, but the Pirates have a three-run lead heading to the ninth. The Giants get one last chance. With two outs and the bases empty, Jung Hoo Lee grounds out to first baseman Spencer Horwitz. The game is over. Final score: San Francisco Giants 2, Pittsburgh Pirates 5. The Pirates win by three.
