Opening Bell at Seibert Stadium
96 degrees and clear at Seibert Stadium. We came out firing. Nine plays to open the game, and Curry finds Konkel on a short right pass. Two yards, but they're the sweetest two yards of the day. Touchdown, Salukis. Green's kick is true. 7 to 0. Samford answers with a punt. We take over, but the drive stalls. Gorman pins them at the 7. Then the gift. Samford's offense can't get out of their own end zone. Safety. We'll take those two points. 9 to 0. Green lines up for a 39-yard field goal. It's no good. We leave points on the board, but the lead holds. 9 to 0 at the quarter.
The Bulldogs Bite Back
Samford finds life. Johnson hits Aukerman on a short left pass, five yards to the end zone. 9 to 7. The crowd shifts. We answer with a drive of our own. Ten plays, grinding. Then Curry finds Marshall on the short right, seven yards, and we're back in the end zone. The two-point attempt fails, but it's 15 to 7. Samford gets the ball back with seconds left. Johnson completes one to Thomas, a 15-yard gain to our 38. First down. The clock runs out on the half, but they carry that momentum into the third.
The Tie Game
Chapman rushes for three yards and a first down. We're moving. But Green's 47-yard attempt sails wide. Another miss. Samford takes over and goes to work. Johnson to Aukerman again, five yards, touchdown. Then the two-point conversion. Successful. 15 to 15. The game is knotted up. We trade punts. Then, with the quarter winding down, Thomas rushes right for one yard. The quarter ends. But wait , the turnover comes next.
The Final Stand
Fiegel intercepts Johnson at the 27 and returns it four yards. That's the swing we needed. Wash rushes left for three yards. Touchdown, Salukis. Green's kick is good. 22 to 15. Samford answers with a 42-yard field goal from Ippolito. 22 to 18. It's a one-score game. Green lines up for a 43-yarder. It's no good. Our third miss of the day. Samford takes over, but Thorley's punt gives us the ball at the 23. Five plays. Curry kneels down at the 39. That's the game. 22 to 18. We win.

We escape. We move the ball, nine plays, but we're punting again. Thorley sends it to the end zone for a touchback. Southern Illinois takes over, seven plays, and they're punting too. Lewis returns it 15 yards to our 29. We've got life.
Second Quarter: We Answer Back
Eight plays. Johnson drops back, throws short left to Aukerman. Caught at the goal line. Five yards. Touchdown. Ippolito's kick is good. 9 to 7. We're right back in this. Southern Illinois punts. We punt. They get the ball with four minutes left in the half. Nine plays. Curry again, this time to Marshall, seven yards to the end zone. Touchdown. The two-point try fails. 15 to 7. We've got 34 seconds. Six plays. Johnson finds Thomas short middle, 15 yards, first down to their 38. The period ends. We're driving. Six more plays to start the third. But we stall. Thorley punts 34 yards, out of bounds. 15 to 7.
Third Quarter: Tied Up
Southern Illinois takes over. Eight plays. They get to our 33. Green tries another field goal, this one from 47. No good. We dodge again. Four plays for us, and we're punting. Southern Illinois gets it back, six plays, and they're punting right back. Young returns it six yards to our 28. Nine plays. Johnson again. Short middle to Aukerman. Caught at the goal line. Five yards. Touchdown. And then the two-point try. Aukerman's pass attempt is successful. 15 to 15. We're tied. Southern Illinois punts. We get the ball with 43 seconds left in the third. Five plays. Thomas rushes right for one yard. And the quarter ends.
Fourth Quarter: The One That Got Away
We're tied at 15. Southern Illinois gets the ball. Five plays. Wash rushes left, three yards, touchdown. Extra point good. 22 to 15. We need an answer. Fifteen plays. But on the first one, Johnson's pass is intercepted by Fiegel at our 27. He returns it four yards. We're in trouble. But we fight. We drive. And Ippolito lines up from 42 yards. It's good. 22 to 18. Southern Illinois takes over. Nine plays. They get to our 43. Green tries again, from 43. No good. We've got the ball, two minutes left, down four. Four plays. Thorley punts 55 yards to their 23. Three missed field goals by them. We just couldn't finish.
