Intro

This is Missed It. UAlbany at Buffalo, Thursday, September 3, 75 and showers at Broadview Stadium, wind 11 miles an hour, with the Great Danes. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

First Blood in the Rain

75 degrees and showers at Broadview Stadium, wind 11 miles an hour. We open with a punt exchange, neither side giving an inch. Buffalo pins us at our own 7, we answer with a 51-yard punt from Myers, and Greer brings it back 16. Then the flag: roughing the kicker on Boyer. Fifteen yards, automatic first down. The Bulls keep the drive alive, but our defense holds, and Stumpf punts again. Then Colón goes to work. No huddle, shotgun. He finds Groves over the middle, caught at the 1-yard line, and Groves powers in for 14 yards and the touchdown. Kocan's kick is good. 7 to 0, Great Danes. But Buffalo answers. Sixteen plays, grinding all the way into the second quarter. Holmes to Morrow, 9 yards, touchdown. The pass interference flag is declined. 7 to 7. We're tied, and the rain keeps falling.

The Kicking Game Grinds

Punts. Punts everywhere. Myers, Stumpf, back and forth, field position a chess match. Then the penalty: unnecessary roughness on Fallon, 8 yards, backs us up. We punt again. Buffalo takes over, and Holmes finds Morrow again, 4 yards, touchdown. 7 to 14. The Bulls have the lead. We need an answer. Myers booms one 57 yards to the Buffalo 8. The Bulls go three-and-out, and we get the ball back at midfield with under a minute. Colón moves us, and Kocan lines up for a 46-yard field goal. It's good. 10 to 14 at the half. We're within four, and the kickoff gets interesting: Heitmeyer kicks, Walker fumbles, Smith-Johnson forces it, out of bounds at the 33. Buffalo kneels, and that's the half.

The Turnover Swing

We open the third with a quick three-and-out. Buffalo punts, we take over, and Colón drops back. He throws, and Brown steps in front. Intercepted at the 20. The Bulls can't capitalize, punting it back. We punt again. Then the moment: Holmes drops back, Johnson Jr. gets home, the sack, the fumble, and Royal recovers at the Buffalo 27. We have life. Colón doesn't waste it. He finds Murray Jr. over the middle, caught at the 1, and Murray Jr. finishes it. 14 yards, touchdown. Kocan's kick is good. 17 to 14, Great Danes. The sideline erupts, the rain doesn't matter. Buffalo punts, we punt, and the third quarter ends with the Bulls pinned at their own 6.

Heartbreak at the End

The fourth quarter is a war of punts. Stumpf booms one 60 yards for a touchback. We drive, but it stalls, and Myers punts. Then the flag: holding on Pruitt, 10 yards, and Buffalo takes over at the 39. Holmes goes to work, and with 4:53 left, he finds Morrow one more time. Five yards, touchdown. 17 to 21. The Bulls have the lead. We get the ball back with 4:53 on the clock. Colón drives us. Sixteen plays. With 1:51 left, he finds Rae for 24 yards to the Buffalo 20. First down. We're knocking on the door. Then, with 1:02 left, Colón throws to McAuliffe, caught at the 3-yard line, 6 yards, but Bracey is there. Turnover on downs. The ball goes back to Buffalo at the 3. The Bulls kneel. Once. Twice. The clock hits zero. Final: 17 to 21. We came all the way back, we had the ball with a chance to win, and it slipped away.

By the Numbers

The Great Danes by the numbers. Final score, UAlbany 17, Buffalo 21. 276 yards of offense to their 340, 204 through the air and 72 on the ground. 19 first downs. 5 of 19 on third down. 1 turnover for us, 1 for them. We held the ball for just over 28 minutes.
