We're on the road, and Stanford takes the ball first. They move it a bit, but it stalls, and they punt it away to Toney at the 23. Our turn. Three plays. That's all it takes. Mensah drops back, fires short right to Toney, and it's a turnover. We give it right back. Stanford takes over, grinds out eight plays, and settles for a 30-yard field goal. 3 to 0, them. Then it's our turn to answer. And we answer fast. Mensah finds Toney from 23 yards out, and just like that, we're on the board. 7 to 3. The crowd is still settling in, and we've already taken the lead. Stanford tries to respond, but Ford gets stopped at the line. Turnover. Our ball. Twelve plays. We march. And at the end of it, Mensah hits Toney again, this time from 2 yards out. Touchdown. 14 to 3. And then a penalty on the extra point pushes us back, but Weinberg still knocks it through. 15 to 3. We're rolling. The defense is flying. And we're not done yet.

The Second Quarter Surge

We trade punts to start the second. Then we take over at our own 11. Eight plays. Brown takes it in from 5 yards out. Touchdown. 21 to 3. Stanford gets the ball back, but they can't do anything. Punt. We take over again, and this time it's a 12-play drive. Mensah finds Upshaw from 5 yards out. Touchdown. 28 to 3. Stanford finally gets something going, a 13-play drive, but they have to settle for a field goal. 28 to 6. We take a knee to end the half. Up 22. It feels good, but we know the job isn't done. We get the ball to start the second half, and we don't waste it. Eight plays. Mensah launches one to Barkate from 34 yards out. Touchdown. 35 to 6. The floodgates are open.

The Third Quarter Breakthrough

Stanford tries to answer, but their drive stalls. They punt, and Lyle muffs it. Stanford recovers at our 5. But wait. A flag. Illegal touch of kick. The call is upheld. We keep the ball. We take over at our own 7. Eight plays. And then Mensah uncorks a bomb. Toney, 47 yards. Touchdown. 42 to 6. Stanford is reeling. They can't move the ball. We punt, they punt. Then they put together a 15-play drive, but it ends with an incomplete pass on fourth down. Turnover on downs. We've got them.

Closing It Out

We get the ball back, but we turn it over. Nickel's pass is picked off at the 5. Stanford takes over, but they can't do anything. Punt. We take over at our own 37. Six plays. Weinberg lines up for a 46-yard field goal. He drills it. 45 to 6. Stanford gets the ball back, runs a few plays, and that's it. The clock hits zero. It's over. 45 to 6. We came, we dominated, and we left no doubt.

Three plays, turnover. We take over. We drive. Eight plays. We get to the Miami 13. Kenney steps up and drills a 30-yard field goal. We're on the board first. 3 to 0. Then it falls apart. Mensah hits Toney from 23 yards out. Touchdown. But wait , there's a flag. Roughing the passer on Galvan. Fifteen yards. No play. They get another chance. And they take it. Toney again, this time from two yards out. Touchdown. 14 to 3. Then the extra point. Weinberg kicks it through. But there's a penalty on Miami , unnecessary roughness on Lofton. Fifteen yards. They enforce it on the kickoff. That makes it 15 to 3. We get the ball back. Seven plays, punt. Flintoft again, 45 yards, fair catch. Miami takes over. Four plays. They punt it back to us. Joyce boots it 48 yards to our 14. We're down 16 to 3 as the quarter ends.

Second Quarter: The Tide Turns

We get the ball at the 14. Eight plays. We can't move it. Flintoft punts again, 48 yards to the Miami 11. Miami answers. Eight plays. Brown takes it in from five yards out. Touchdown. 21 to 3. We get the ball. Nine plays. We're driving. Flintoft punts , and Miami muffs it! Lyle drops it at the 7. Edwards recovers for us at the 5! But there's a flag. Illegal touch of kick on Johnson. The call is upheld. We lose the ball. Miami takes over. Eight plays. Toney again , 47 yards from Mensah. Touchdown. 42 to 6. We try to answer. Six plays. Warren throws to Onovughe, 17 yards. But holding on Williams. No play. We punt. Miami punts it back. We get the ball with 2:21 left in the third. Fifteen plays. We drive. We fight. We get all the way down. Fourth down. Warren drops back. He throws deep right to Robinson, thrown to the Miami end zone. Incomplete. Turnover on downs.

Fourth Quarter: The Final Whistle

Miami takes over. Seven plays. Pringle runs for no gain. Then Nickel drops back , and Eckhardt intercepts it at our 5! We take over. Six plays. We can't convert. Punt. Miami drives. Six plays. Weinberg hits a 46-yard field goal. 45 to 6. We get the ball one last time. Five plays. Davis runs for four yards. And that's it. The clock runs out. Final: Miami 45, Stanford 6. It was a tough one, Cardinal fans. We had our moments , the field goals, the interception, that muffed punt that got called back. But Miami was just too much tonight. We'll get them next time.
