Second Quarter: Trading Blows Before the Half

Weaver drops back, tries to force one, and Dobbs picks it off at their 34. Returns it to the 42. We hand them the ball, and they make us pay. Kim finds Mack short left, five yards, touchdown. 0 to 7. We're chasing now. We answer. Weaver, deep left, finds Nix at the goal line. Twenty-seven yards, touchdown. Sinatra's kick is good. 7 to 7. We're right back in it. Then, with seconds left in the half, they get flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. Fifteen yards. We're in their territory. Sinatra lines up from 45 yards out. The clock hits zero. He drills it. 10 to 7 at the half. We take the lead into the locker room.

Third Quarter: A Gut Punch and a Response

They come out swinging. Blue takes it up the middle, 50 yards, touchdown. 10 to 14. The lead is gone. But we don't fold. We march. Fifteen plays. Weaver finds Kopa-Kaawalauole for five, keeps the chains moving. Then, from the 10, he finds Hoch short right, touchdown. 17 to 14. We've got the lead back. Then it happens. Weaver drops back, they get home. Sacked for a loss of 11. The ball comes out. Llewellyn scoops it up at our 1-yard line and falls into the end zone. 17 to 21. A defensive touchdown. The air goes out of the building. We head to the fourth down four.

Fourth Quarter: The Finish

We need a score. Weaver drops back, fires deep middle to Hoch. Forty yards. Touchdown. 24 to 21. We've got the lead again. They get the ball back, and we need a stop. Kim drops back, tries to force it, and Lee steps in front of it. Interception at their 33. We take over. We chew clock, and Sinatra lines up from 49 yards out. The pressure is on. He drills it. 27 to 21. Three-point game with 1:37 left. They get one last chance. Kim drops back, throws short middle to Long, and Danielson breaks it up. Turnover on downs. Weaver takes a knee. It's over. Final: San José State 27, Eastern Michigan 21. We came into their house, took their best shot, and walked out with the win.

Second Quarter: Trading Blows

We get the turnover we need. Dobbs picks off Weaver and returns it to the 42. Kim finds Mack for five yards, and it's a touchdown. We're on the board first. The crowd is alive. But they answer right back. Weaver hits Nix deep for 27 yards, and just like that, it's tied. Then, with no time left, Sinatra drills a 45-yard field goal. They take the lead into the half. 10 to 7. It feels like we gave one away at the end.

Third Quarter: A Wild Ride

We come out firing. Blue takes it up the middle, 50 yards, and he's gone. Touchdown. We're back on top. But they respond with a long, grinding drive, and Hoch is wide open for a 10-yard score. They've got the lead back. Then, the moment that flips this game. Hardin sacks Weaver, the ball comes out, and Llewellyn scoops it up at the one-yard line and falls into the end zone. Defensive touchdown. We're up 21 to 17. The place is rocking.

Fourth Quarter: The Heartbreak

They come right back. Weaver finds Hoch deep middle for 40 yards and a touchdown. They lead 24 to 21. We need an answer. We get the ball back, but we're punting again. Then, with just over a minute left, Kim drops back and throws. It's intercepted by Lee. Our hopes are fading. They add a 49-yard field goal to make it 27 to 21. We get one last chance, but Kim's pass to Long is broken up. Turnover on downs. They kneel it out. Final: 27 to 21. That one hurts.
