The dugout is alive, the fans are on their feet, and we've got something cooking here. But we're not done yet. The bases end up loaded, two outs on the board, and Paul Goldschmidt comes to the plate. He works the count, and the pitcher misses. Ball four. Goldschmidt takes his base, and Spencer Jones trots home. That's another run. José Caballero moves to third, Austin Wells to second, and we're up two to nothing. The floodgates are opening, folks. We tack on a couple more before the inning is all said and done, and when the dust settles, we've put up a four-spot. Four runs in the top of the second, and we're rolling. The Padres come up in the bottom of the second, and they go down in order. Three batters, no runs, and we're sitting pretty at four to nothing. Top of the third, and we're not letting up. No outs, two runners on, and George Lombard Jr. steps to the plate. He gets a pitch he can handle and sends it deep enough to right field. Tatis Jr. makes the catch, but it's a sacrifice fly. Ben Rice tags up and scores. That's our fifth run of the night, and we're up five to nothing. The Padres come up in the bottom of the third, and again, they go down quietly. Three batters, no runs. We're through three innings, and we've got a commanding lead.

Innings 4-6

Top of the fourth, and the Yankees send three batters to the plate. Quick inning, no runs, and we're still up five to nothing. Now the Padres come up, and they're desperate to get something going. No outs, bases empty, and Manny Machado steps in. He's been quiet so far, but he's one swing away from changing the game. The pitch comes in, and Machado gets all of it. He sends a fly ball deep to left center field, and it's gone. A solo home run, and the Padres are on the board. Five to one now, and you can feel the home crowd start to stir. It's a big play, no doubt, but we've still got a four-run lead, and we're not about to let this one slip away.

The Sequence

Top of the fifth, and we're back at it. The Yankees send five batters to the plate, but we can't push anything across. No runs, and the score stays at five to one. Bottom of the fifth, and the Padres get four batters up, but they can't do anything with it either. No runs, and we're still holding strong. Top of the sixth, and we've got six batters coming up. We're putting together some at-bats, but the runs just aren't coming. No runs, and the score remains five to one. Now the bottom of the sixth, and this is where things get interesting. No outs, bases empty, and Manny Machado steps in again. He works the count and draws a walk. A runner on first, and the Padres are starting to threaten. Next up, Jackson Merrill. He's already struck out once tonight, but he's looking for redemption. He works the count, and he draws a walk too. Now we've got two runners on, Machado on second, Merrill on first, and only one out. The tension is building. Luis Campusano steps to the plate, and he's looking to drive these runners in. He gets a pitch and flies out sharply to right field, Jasson Domínguez makes the catch, and Machado tags up and moves to third. Two outs now, runners on the corners, and the Padres are knocking on the door. But we bear down, we get the next batter, and we escape the inning without any damage. Still five to one. He works the at-bat, and then, on a pitch he's got to protect, he swings and just gets a piece of it. The ball ticks off the bat and into the catcher's glove for a foul tip. Strike three. The inning is over. The rally dies right there, and you can feel the air go out of the building just a little. We had our shot, and we couldn't take it. The top of the second is where things start to slip. With no outs and nobody on, Ben Rice steps in and lines a single to right field, right at Fernando Tatis Jr. It's a clean hit, and suddenly the Yankees have a runner on. The inning starts to build. The next few batters work the count, and with two outs and a runner on, Spencer Jones comes up. He takes a sharp line drive and sends it screaming to right field, right at Tatis again. But this one is deep. It gets down, and Ben Rice is off to the races. He rounds third and scores. The Yankees are on the board, one to nothing. And they're not done. The bases load up, and with two outs, Paul Goldschmidt steps in. He works a walk, and that forces Spencer Jones home. Two to nothing. The inning keeps rolling, and you can see the momentum completely shift to their side. They're putting together quality at-bats, and we're just a step behind. The bottom of the second is quick. Three batters, no runs. We can't answer. Then the top of the third, and the Yankees are right back at it. With no outs and two runners on, George Lombard Jr. comes up. And in the bottom of the fourth, we finally get something. With no outs and nobody on, Manny Machado steps in. He's been quiet so far, but he's due. He gets a pitch he likes, and he doesn't miss it. He sends a fly ball deep to left center field. It's got the distance. It's got the height. And it clears the wall. A solo home run. The score is now five to one. The crowd erupts. It's just one run, but it's something. It's a sign of life. We're on the board, and we're not going down without a fight. The top of the fifth is another quiet one for the Yankees. Five batters come up, but no runs cross. We're holding the line. Then the bottom of the fifth, and we get four batters to the plate, but we can't push anything across. The score stays five to one. The top of the sixth, and the Yankees send six batters up, but again, no runs. We're keeping it right there. Then comes the bottom of the sixth, and this is where it gets interesting. With no outs and nobody on, Manny Machado steps in again. He's already got a homer tonight, and he's seeing the ball well. He works the count, and he earns a walk. A runner on first, no outs. Then Jackson Merrill steps in. He's looking to make up for that strikeout in the first. He's patient, he works the count, and he draws a walk of his own. Now we've got two runners on, no outs. The crowd is on its feet. This is the chance. With one out and two runners on, Luis Campusano comes up. Wrap-up

It's a tough one to swallow. The final score is five to one, New York Yankees by four. We had our chances, especially in that bottom of the sixth, but we couldn't get the big hit when we needed it.
