Oregon State at Houston

This is Missed It. Oregon State at Houston, Saturday, September 5, 86 and clear at TDECU Stadium, with the Beavers. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

Pregame

It's Oregon State Beavers football, and we are on the road in Houston. The Beavers are oh and one on the season, and the Cougars are one and oh. We've got the ball first, and that's exactly how we want to start. The crowd is loud, the lights are bright, and it's time to see what this team is made of. Let's go Beavers.

Q1

We open the game with the football, and we're moving. Seven plays, and we're knocking on the door. But Houston's defense stiffens, and we come away with nothing. Turnover on downs. That's a punch to the gut, but it's early. We've got time. Houston takes over, and their quarterback Weigman is feeling it. On third down, he drops back, scans the field, and finds Thomas on the short right. Thomas catches it at the Houston 43, and he's got room. He picks up 13 yards to the Houston 47, and that's a first down. The Cougars are moving, and we need to find our footing. Then it happens. Weigman drops back again, and he finds Thomas once more. This time Thomas catches it at our 24, and he's gone. Thirty-one yards to the end zone. Touchdown, Houston. The kick is no good, so it's six, not seven. We're down 6 to 0, and we need an answer. And we get one. Atkinson takes the handoff, rushes right, and he's in. Three yards to the house. Touchdown, Oregon State. Ojeda's kick is good, and just like that, we're up 7 to 6. That's how you respond. Houston comes right back. Weigman throws deep left to Young, and Young hauls it in at our 16. Forty-seven yards. First down. The Cougars are knocking again, and they settle for a field goal. It's 9 to 7, Houston, and we need to take control. We get the ball back with just over four minutes left in the quarter. Eight plays, and we're driving. But on fourth down, Atkinson rushes middle for no gain. Turnover on downs at the Houston 48. Guillaume is down on the play, and that's a tough break. We had our chance, and we let it slip away. It's 9 to 7, and we're chasing.

The Sequence

This is where the game gets decided. Houston has the ball, and they're trying to add to their lead. But on the first play of the second quarter, Hughes rushes left, and he fumbles. Vickers forces it, and Vadrawale III recovers at our 32. We've got the ball, and we've got momentum. We take over, and we're moving. Six plays, and we're in business. But then Atkinson throws short left to Glass, and it goes nowhere. Zero yards. The drive stalls, and we're forced to punt. That's a missed opportunity, and it hurts. Houston takes over, and they drive. Eleven plays, but our defense holds, and they punt. We get the ball back, but we can't do anything with it. Four plays, and we're punting right back. Then Houston strikes. Sanford II rushes left, and he's gone. Fifty-six yards to the end zone. Touchdown, Houston. The kick is good, and it's 16 to 7. That's a dagger, and we're reeling. We get the ball back, and we drive. Ten plays, and we're in field goal range. But the kick is no good. Missed field goal. We come away with nothing, and the frustration is building. Houston takes over, and they're methodical. Twelve plays, and they're knocking on our door. On third down, Weigman finds Overmyer on the short left. Three yards to our 18, and that's a first down. They settle for a field goal, and it's 19 to 7. We're down by two scores, and we need something big. We get the ball back with 27 seconds left in the half, but we can't do anything. Six plays, and we turn it over on downs. Houston takes over, runs out the clock, and we head to the locker room down 19 to 7. This half turned on that fumble recovery. We had the ball, we had momentum, and we let it slip away. Now we need a miracle.

Q3

We get the ball to start the second half, and we need to make a statement. Four plays, and we're punting. That's not the start we needed. Houston takes over, and they're driving. On third down, Young rushes left for 11 yards to our 33. First down. The Cougars are moving, and we can't stop them. Then Hughes rushes middle for one yard. Touchdown, Houston. The kick is good, and it's 26 to 7. We're down by 19, and this game is slipping away. But we don't quit. We get the ball back, and we drive. Eighteen plays. We're chewing up clock, and we're moving the chains. Then Atkinson finds Legree on the short right. He catches it at the Houston 15, and he's got room. Twenty-five yards to the Houston 7. First down. That's the spark we needed. Then Atkinson drops back again, and he finds Legree once more. This time it's short left, and Legree catches it at the Houston 1. Seven yards to the end zone. Touchdown, Oregon State. The two-point attempt fails, so it's 26 to 13. We're still down, but we're fighting. Houston takes over, and they're trying to run out the clock. But on third down, Weigman drops back, and he throws it right to Vadrawale III. Intercepted at our 1. Vadrawale III returns it 24 yards to our 25. We've got the ball, and we've got life.

Q4

We take over at our 25, and we're driving. Eight plays, and we're in business. Then Atkinson finds Olsen on the short middle. He catches it at the Houston 36, and he's got room. Twenty-one yards to the Houston 19. First down. We're knocking on the door. Then Newberry takes the handoff, rushes middle, and he's in. Four yards to the end zone. Touchdown, Oregon State. Ojeda's kick is good, and it's 26 to 20. We're within one score, and the crowd is on its feet. This is our game to take. Houston takes over, and they're trying to answer. Eleven plays, and they're driving. Then Weigman finds Thomas on the deep left. He catches it at our 8, and he's got room. Thirty-seven yards to our 5. First down. The Cougars are knocking, and we need a stop. But we can't get one. Weigman rushes for one yard. Touchdown, Houston. The kick is good, and it's 33 to 20. That's a punch to the gut, and we're running out of time. We get the ball back with five minutes left, and we need two scores. Ten plays, and we're driving. But then Atkinson gets sacked. Loss of nine yards to our 30. That's a momentum killer. Then Atkinson finds Olsen on the short middle. Nine yards to the Houston 47. First down. We're still alive. But then Atkinson gets sacked again. Loss of 11 yards to our 47. Turnover on downs. That's the game. We had our chance, and we couldn't get it done. Houston takes over, runs out the clock, and that's it. Final score: Oregon State 20, Houston 33.

Wrap-up

It's a tough one to swallow. We fought, we clawed, we gave ourselves a chance. But in the end, Houston was just too much. We're oh and one, and we've got a lot of work to do. But this team has heart, and we're not going to stop fighting. We'll be back. Go Beavers.

By the Numbers

The Beavers by the numbers. Final score, Oregon State 20, Houston 33. 402 yards of offense to their 533, 376 through the air and 26 on the ground. 20 first downs. 4 of 15 on third down. 0 turnovers for us, 2 for them. We held the ball for just over 29 minutes.

Oregon State at Houston

This is Missed It. Oregon State at Houston, Saturday, September 5, 86 and clear at TDECU Stadium, with the Cougars. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

Pregame

It's Oregon State Beavers at Houston Cougars, and the Beavers have the ball first. We're at zero-zero, the whole game ahead of us, and the first test comes right away. Our defense has to set the tone, because Oregon State came here to play, and we know it.

Q1

The Beavers open with the ball, and they move it a little, but our defense holds. Seven plays and they're done, turning it over on downs. That's the statement we needed. We take over and Weigman goes to work. Midway through the first, it's third down and we need a conversion. Weigman drops back, scans, and finds Thomas on the short right, caught at the 43, good for 13 yards to the 47. First down. The chains move, the crowd gets louder, and we're rolling. Then the big one. Weigman again, short right, Thomas again, and this time Thomas catches it at the 24 and just takes off. Thirty-one yards to the end zone. Touchdown. The kick attempt fails, so it's six, not seven, but we're on the board first. Six to nothing. Oregon State answers fast. Atkinson takes it right, three yards, and he's in. Their kick is good, and just like that it's seven to six, them. We needed that drive to mean something, and it did, but now we're chasing. We don't chase for long. Weigman goes deep left to Young, caught at the 16, 47 yards, first down. The penalty is declined because we don't need it. That's the kind of throw that changes a half. We settle for the field goal, though, and it's nine to seven. We're back on top. The Beavers get one more chance in the quarter, and they push it to our 48. Fourth down. Atkinson takes it up the middle, and Yates meets him. Zero yards. Turnover on downs. Guillaume goes down on the play, and we hope he's alright, but the defense just made the stop we needed.

The Sequence

This is where the game gets decided. We take over at the end of the first, and Hughes carries it left, seven yards to the 32, but the ball comes out. Fumbled, forced by Vickers, recovered by Oregon State at the 32. We just gave it right back, and the Beavers have life. They move it a little, and then Atkinson throws short left to Glass, caught at the 36, no gain. Webb is there to make the tackle. That's the stop. That's the moment the momentum starts to turn back our way. They punt, we take over, and we don't do much with it, punting right back. Oregon State gets it, four plays, and they punt again. We take over at our own end, and this is the drive. Weigman hands to Sanford II, who goes left, and then he's gone. Fifty-six yards to the end zone. Touchdown. The kick is good, and it's sixteen to seven. The lead is real now. The Beavers try to answer, ten plays, but they miss the field goal. We take over with under three minutes left in the half, and we drive. Weigman finds Overmyer short left, caught at the 18, three yards, out of bounds, first down. That keeps the drive alive, and we punch in the field goal. Nineteen to seven at the half. Oregon State gets one more shot, six plays, and our defense holds them on downs. We take a knee, and the half ends with us up twelve. The fumble was scary, but the defense answered, and the offense answered, and we go to the locker room feeling like we own this game.

Q3

The Beavers get the ball to start the second half, and they go three-and-out. Four plays, punt. We take over, and this is the drive that puts it away. Young takes it left, 11 yards to the 33, out of bounds, first down. The defense is on its heels, and we keep pushing. We march it down, and then Hughes takes it up the middle, one yard, and he's in. Touchdown. The kick is good, and it's twenty-six to seven. This feels like the knockout punch. But Oregon State doesn't go away. They put together an 18-play drive, eating the whole clock, and with about a minute and a half left, Atkinson finds Legree short right, caught at the 15, 25 yards to the 7, first down. They're knocking on the door. Then Atkinson again, short left to Legree, caught at the 1, seven yards, touchdown. The two-point attempt fails, so it's twenty-six to thirteen. They're back in it, and we need to answer. We take over with 36 seconds left in the third, and we try to move. But Weigman drops back, and he throws one that Vadrawale reads all the way. Intercepted at the 1, returned 24 yards to the 25. We just gave them the ball back with all the momentum. This is the moment the game could slip.

Q4

Oregon State takes over, and they smell blood. Atkinson throws short middle to Olsen, caught at the 36, 21 yards to the 19, first down. They're inside the red zone, and the crowd is nervous. Then Newberry takes it up the middle, four yards, and he's in. Touchdown. The kick is good, and it's twenty-six to twenty. A six-point game, and they have all the momentum. We need an answer, and we need it now. Weigman drops back, goes deep left to Thomas, caught at the 8, 37 yards to the 5, first down. That's the throw of the game. That's the one that says we're not letting this slip. And then Weigman keeps it himself, one yard, touchdown. The kick is good, and it's thirty-three to twenty. The lead is back to thirteen, and the clock is our friend. Oregon State gets the ball back with five minutes left, and they have to go. Atkinson drops back, and Porter gets home. Sack, loss of nine, back to the 30. That's the play that takes the air out of them. But they keep fighting. Atkinson finds Olsen short middle, caught at the 46, nine yards to the 47, first down. They're still alive. Then they push it to our end, and Atkinson drops back one more time. White gets home. Sack, loss of eleven, back to the 47. Turnover on downs. That's the game. That's the stop that seals it. We take over, run the clock, punt it away, and Oregon State gets one last chance with 41 seconds left. Four plays, and the clock runs out. Game over. Thirty-three to twenty.

Wrap-up

We win. Thirty-three to twenty. The fumble in the second quarter was scary, and the interception in the third gave them life, but this team answered every time. Weigman threw the big ones, Thomas made the plays, and the defense came up with the sacks when it mattered most. Thirteen points, that's the final margin, and it feels exactly like what we needed. The Cougars are 1 to 0, and we're heading home happy.

By the Numbers

The Cougars by the numbers. Final score, Houston 33, Oregon State 20. 533 yards of offense to their 402, 305 through the air and 228 on the ground. 24 first downs. 7 of 13 on third down. 2 turnovers for us, 0 for them. We held the ball for just under 31 minutes.
