Pregame

Alright Skyhawks fans, it's a beautiful day for football and we've got a big one ahead of us. The Stonehill Skyhawks are on the road taking on the New Haven Chargers. We're sitting at zero-zero, nothing on the board yet, and we've got the ball first. Our offense is going to set the tone right from the opening snap. Let's see what we're made of today.

Q1

And we start with the ball, but it doesn't go our way. One play and it's over , a turnover on our very first drive. We give it right back to New Haven before we even get a chance to breathe. That's not how you want to open the game, but we've got a defense that can hold. New Haven takes over and they march. Eight plays, chewing up clock, moving the ball down into our territory. They get all the way down to our 21-yard line, and Quigley lines up for the field goal. The kick is up... and it's good. Three points for the Chargers. We're down 3 to 0, but it's early. Now it's our turn to answer. O'Connell takes the snap from the shotgun, and he keeps it himself, rolling left. He finds a seam and takes off , 25 yards down to the New Haven 25, out of bounds. First down. That's the spark we needed. We keep pushing. O'Connell drops back, scans the field, and lets it fly deep down the middle. Garrett is running under it, catches it at the four-yard line, and walks into the end zone. Touchdown, Skyhawks! Scalese's kick is good, and just like that we're up 7 to 3. New Haven gets the ball back and they're not done. Duffy drops back and throws deep left to Troy, who hauls it in for 32 yards down to our 34. They're moving again. But our defense holds, and their field goal attempt misses. We escape. We trade punts after that. Both defenses are settling in, and the clock keeps ticking. We get the ball back with just over a minute left in the quarter. O'Connell finds Garrett short left, and he picks up 7 yards, enough for the first down. We're driving as the quarter comes to a close.

Q2

We're still moving as the second quarter opens, but the drive stalls and we have to punt it away. New Haven takes over, but our defense stands tall. They go for it on fourth down and we stop them. Turnover on downs. Our ball. Now we're in business. We put together a long, methodical drive. Eleven plays, grinding it out. And then we get down to the goal line. Garrett takes the handoff up the middle, just one yard, and he's in. Touchdown, Skyhawks! Scalese adds the extra point, and we're up 14 to 3. New Haven gets the ball back, but they can't do anything with it. Our defense forces another turnover on downs. We take over with just over three minutes left in the half. O'Connell drops back, and he's looking deep. Washington, Jr. is streaking down the middle, and O'Connell lays it right in there. Caught at the goal line, 31 yards, touchdown! Scalese's kick is good. We're up 21 to 3 and the crowd is loving it. New Haven tries to answer before the half. Duffy completes a short pass to Chandler, who turns it upfield for 27 yards down to our 33. But then the clock runs out. We take a knee, and that's the half. We're up 21 to 3.

The Sequence

The game is decided right here. We start the second half with the ball, but we can't convert on fourth down and we give it back. New Haven takes over, and they're desperate. Duffy drops back, throws short to Lawson at our 18, but Bannon is there to break it up. Turnover on downs. Our ball again. We punt it back, and New Haven comes right back. Duffy throws deep down the middle to Glaudin, aiming for the end zone, but it falls incomplete. Another turnover on downs. Our defense is absolutely suffocating them. We punt again, and New Haven gets one more chance. Duffy drops back, and he's looking for a receiver. But Goodson steps in front of it. Interception at our 22, and he returns it a yard to the 23. That's the dagger. That's the play that seals it. We take over and start to run the clock. We pick up a big penalty , face mask on New Haven, 14 yards, first down. We're moving. But then Garrett takes the handoff, and he fumbles at the one-yard line. Touchback. New Haven gets the ball back, but it doesn't matter. The game is already decided.

Q4

New Haven gets the ball at the 20 after the touchback, but our defense is still flying around. They go for it on fourth down, and we stop them again. Turnover on downs. Our ball. Now we're just running out the clock. Eason takes the handoff up the middle, and he breaks loose , 18 yards down to the New Haven 38. First down. The crowd is on their feet. Eason again, up the middle, and he's off to the races , 21 yards down to the five-yard line, out of bounds. First down. We're knocking on the door. But we can't punch it in, and we turn it over on downs. New Haven takes over with just over four minutes left. Laney takes the handoff up the middle and he breaks one , 44 yards down to our 48. First down. They're not giving up. But the clock is our friend. They can't get anything else going, and they have to punt it away. We take over with 47 seconds left, and we just run out the clock. That's the game.

Final score: Stonehill 21, New Haven 3. We came into their house, we took the punch early, and we answered. Twenty-one unanswered points after that early field goal. It's a new day at the home field, and we've got the Stonehill Skyhawks coming in to face our New Haven Chargers. Stonehill has the ball first, and the scoreboard reads zeroes across the board. We're one and oh, they're one and oh, and somebody's perfect record is about to take a hit. The crowd is up, the energy is real, and we're ready to see what this Chargers defense can do against a Skyhawks offense that came here to play.

Q1

Stonehill takes the field first, and on the very first play from scrimmage, something goes wrong for them. The ball is loose, the Chargers are on it, and just like that we've got the football. One play, that's all it took. Our offense takes over and starts marching. Eight plays, methodical, patient, and we're knocking on the door. The drive stalls inside the red zone, but that's fine, because Quigley trots out and drills a 21-yard field goal. Fragale holds, Riska snaps, and it's good. Three nothing, New Haven. The crowd is alive, we've drawn first blood, and the defense that forced that turnover is feeling themselves. But Stonehill answers. They don't flinch. O'Connell takes the snap in the shotgun, no huddle, and he keeps it himself, rushing left for 25 yards, all the way out to our 25. The Skyhawks are moving. They're not going to roll over. And then, on the next drive, O'Connell drops back and fires deep middle. Garrett is running under it, caught at the four, and he's in. Touchdown. The extra point is good, and just like that it's 7 to 3, Stonehill. The lead we worked for is gone, and the Skyhawks are the ones celebrating now. We need an answer. Duffy drops back, shotgun, and he lets it fly deep left. Troy is there, catching it at the Stonehill 42, a 32-yard gain that puts us in business at their 34. This is the response we needed. But the drive stalls. Quigley comes out for another field goal attempt, and this one misses. We come away with nothing, and the momentum we were building evaporates. Stonehill takes over, runs six plays, and punts. We get the ball back, run five plays, and punt it right back. The quarter is winding down, and Stonehill has the ball again, driving. O'Connell finds Garrett short left, seven yards, a big third-down conversion that keeps the drive alive and pushes us into the second quarter trailing by four.

Q2

We're down 7 to 3, and we need something to go our way. Our drive starts promising enough, five plays, but it ends on downs. We can't convert, we can't sustain, and we hand the ball back to Stonehill with the game hanging in the balance. And Stonehill makes us pay. They chew up the clock, eleven plays, and they're knocking on the door again. Garrett takes the handoff, rushes middle, one yard, and he's in. Touchdown. The extra point is good, and it's 14 to 3. The Skyhawks are pulling away, and we're standing here watching it happen. We get the ball back, five plays, and again it's downs. We can't move the football, we can't find any rhythm, and Stonehill takes over with a chance to put this game away before halftime. They don't waste it. O'Connell drops back, deep middle, and Washington, Jr. is running free. Caught at the goal line, 31 yards, touchdown. The extra point is good, and it's 21 to 3. The game is slipping away from us, and the crowd has gone quiet. We need a spark. Duffy drops back, shotgun, and he finds Chandler short left. Chandler catches it at the Stonehill 41 and takes off, 27 yards down to the 33. First down, and there's life. But it's short-lived. The very next play, the ball is loose, Stonehill recovers, and the turnover kills whatever hope we were building. Stonehill takes over, runs two plays, and the half comes to an end. We're down 21 to 3, and it feels like a mountain to climb.

Halftime

So here we are at the half, down 21 to 3, and it's hard to find the words. The play that turned this game was that touchdown before the break, Washington, Jr. catching that deep ball and walking into the end zone. That was the moment the game got away from us. We had chances, we had opportunities, but we couldn't convert on downs, we couldn't hold onto the football, and Stonehill made us pay every single time. We need a completely different half. We need to find a way to move the ball, to sustain drives, to give this defense a chance to rest. We need a miracle, plain and simple. But this is our home field, and we're not done fighting.

We get the ball back, four plays, and Duffy drops back on third down, looking for Lawson short. Bannon breaks it up. Turnover on downs. The pulse fades. Stonehill runs four plays and punts, and we get another chance. Seven plays, and Duffy is looking deep middle for Glaudin, thrown toward the end zone, and it falls incomplete. A face mask penalty moves them down to our 13, first down, and they're knocking on the door. But then Garrett takes the handoff, rushes for two yards, and the ball comes loose. Fumbled at the one, touchback. We get the ball back, but it doesn't matter. The game is already decided. It's 21 to 3, and the fourth quarter is just a formality.

Q4

We get the ball back at the twenty, six plays, and we can't convert. Downs again. Stonehill takes over, and Eason starts running. He rushes middle for 18 yards, down to our 38, first down. Then he does it again, 21 yards this time, out of bounds at our five. The Skyhawks are toying with us now, running the clock, grinding us down. They run eleven plays total, and we stop them on downs. It's a small victory, but it doesn't change the scoreboard. We take over with four minutes left, and Laney finally gives us something to cheer about. He rushes middle, breaks through the line, and he's gone. 44 yards down to the Stonehill 48. First down, and the crowd finds its voice one last time. But it's too little, too late. The drive stalls, we punt, and Stonehill takes over with under a minute to play. One play, and the clock runs out. The game is over.

Wrap-up

Final score, Stonehill 21, New Haven 3. It's a tough one to swallow. We had chances early, we had the field goal, we had the momentum, and then it all slipped away. Turnovers, turnovers on downs, missed opportunities. Stonehill was the better team tonight, plain and simple. But we're Chargers fans, and we'll be back next week. We'll regroup, we'll fight, and we'll be ready to go again. That's what we do. That's who we are.
