San Francisco at New York Mets

This is Missed It. San Francisco at New York Mets, Sunday, September 6, 74 and partly cloudy at Citi Field, with the Giants. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

Pregame

It's a beautiful day for baseball as the San Francisco Giants take on the New York Mets. We're here at the ballpark, and both teams are looking to make a statement. The Giants are on the road, and we've got a good feeling about this one. First pitch is moments away, and the energy is building. Let's see what our boys can do today.

Innings 1-3

Top of the first, and the Giants are up. Three batters come to the plate, and we're back to the dugout just like that. No runs, no drama, score stays at zero-zero. The Mets take their turn, four batters, and they don't get anything going either. We're still tied at nothing. Second inning, same story. Giants send three batters up, and we can't crack the code. Mets come back with four of their own, and they're not finding any more success. It's a pitcher's duel out here, and both sides are locked in. Zero-zero after two. Third inning rolls around, and the Giants are up again. Three batters, and we're right back on defense. The Mets come to the plate, and here's where things get interesting. No outs, bases empty, and A.J. Ewing steps in. He takes a swing and sends a ground ball to right field, past Jung Hoo Lee. Ewing is on first with a single. The crowd stirs, but the Mets can't bring him home. We escape the inning, still tied at zero-zero. Three innings in, and this game is exactly where we want it. The Giants have held the Mets in check, and our pitchers are dealing. But we haven't gotten anything going at the plate either. Someone needs to break through, and soon.

Innings 4-6

Top of the fourth, and the Giants finally get something cooking. Two outs, and there's a runner on. Jonah Cox steps to the plate, and he rips a sharp ground ball to right field, past Carson Benge. Bryce Eldridge comes around to third, and Cox hustles into second. Two runners in scoring position, and the crowd is on its feet. This is our chance. Jung Hoo Lee is up, and he doesn't waste any time. He sends a fly ball to right field, and it's deep enough. Benge is there, but the ball drops in. Eldridge scores, Cox scores, and just like that, we've got a two-run lead. The dugout is fired up, and the Giants are on the board. Two-nothing, and we're feeling good. The Mets come up in the bottom of the fourth, and they go down in order. Three batters, no runs, and we're still up by two. The momentum is ours. Top of the fifth, and the Giants are looking to add on. One out, bases empty, and Drew Cavanaugh steps in. He sends a fly ball to right field, and it drops in for a single. Cavanaugh is on first, and we've got something brewing. But then Drew Gilbert steps to the plate with two on, and he strikes out on a foul tip. The rally fizzles, and we can't push another run across. Still two-nothing. The Mets come up in the bottom of the fifth, and they're quiet again. Three batters, no runs. We're cruising. Top of the sixth, and the Giants go down in order. Three batters, no runs. We're still holding onto that two-run lead, but we know it's not enough. We need more insurance, and we need it soon.

The Sequence

Bottom of the sixth, and the Mets are up. Three batters, no runs. We're still up two-nothing, and the defense is holding strong. Top of the seventh, and the Giants can't add on. Three batters, no runs. The lead is still two, but the tension is building. We can feel it. Bottom of the seventh, and here's where the game starts to shift. One out, bases empty, and Carson Benge steps to the plate. He sends a line drive to right field, and it's past Jung Hoo Lee. Benge is on second with a double. The Mets have a runner in scoring position, and the crowd is getting loud. But we bear down and get out of the inning. Still two-nothing. Top of the eighth, and the Giants go down again. Four batters, no runs. We're leaving runners on, and we can't put this game away. The lead is still two, but it feels fragile. Bottom of the eighth, and everything changes. No outs, bases empty, and Brett Baty steps in. He takes a swing and sends a fly ball to left field. It's deep, it's carrying, and it's gone. Baty homers, and just like that, the lead is down to one. Two-one, and the Mets are alive. The inning continues, and the Mets are putting pressure on us. Two outs, and there's a runner on. Carson Seymour is on the mound, and he intentionally walks Juan Soto. First base is open, and we're not letting Soto beat us. But now there are two on, and Bo Bichette steps to the plate. Bichette takes a swing, and he sends a fly ball to left center field. It's deep, it's carrying, and it's gone. A three-run homer. A.J. Ewing scores, Juan Soto scores, Bichette scores. The Mets have taken the lead, four-two, and the air has been sucked out of our dugout. Top of the ninth, and the Giants have one last chance. Three batters, and we can't get anything going. No runs, and the game is over.

Wrap-up

Final score, Giants two, Mets four. We had them. We were up two-nothing, and we let it slip away in the bottom of the eighth. Brett Baty's homer started it, and Bo Bichette's three-run shot finished it. It's a tough one to swallow, but that's baseball. We fought, we held them for seven innings, and we just couldn't close it out. We'll get them next time.

San Francisco at New York Mets

This is Missed It. San Francisco at New York Mets, Sunday, September 6, 74 and partly cloudy at Citi Field, with the Mets. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

Pregame

San Francisco Giants at New York Mets. That's the whole story, plain and simple, as the sun starts to think about setting over Flushing. The Giants are in town, and we've got a ballgame to play. Our Mets are looking to make some noise, and the Giants are looking to spoil it. First pitch is coming up, the crowd is settling into their seats, and we're ready to go. It's a beautiful day for baseball, and we've got nine innings ahead of us to figure out who wants it more.

Innings 1-3

Top of the first, and the Giants are up. Three batters come to the plate, and three batters go back to the dugout. No runs, no drama, just a clean inning for our guy on the mound. Score stays at zero-zero. Bottom of the first, and it's our turn. Four batters step in, and we can't push anything across. A few good swings, maybe a little something started, but nothing to show for it. Zero-zero after one. Top of the second, and the Giants are back at it. Three more batters, three more outs. Our pitcher is dealing, keeping them off balance, and the scoreboard hasn't moved. Zero-zero. Bottom of the second, and we're looking to get something going. Four batters, but again, we come up empty. The tension is starting to build a little. Both teams are feeling each other out, nobody wanting to blink first. Still zero-zero. Top of the third, and the Giants send three more batters to the plate. Three more outs. This is turning into a pitcher's duel, and we're all holding our breath. Zero-zero. Bottom of the third, and here's where things start to get interesting. No outs, bases empty, and A.J. Ewing steps in. He takes a pitch, he sees one he likes, and he rips a ground ball right past the diving attempt of right fielder Jung Hoo Lee. It's a single. The ball is through, and Ewing is standing on first base. The crowd, which has been waiting for a spark, lets out a roar. It's just one hit, but it feels like the dam might be about to break. We've got a runner on, no outs, and the energy in the ballpark just shifted. This is the moment we've been waiting for. The inning continues, but we can't bring him home. Four batters total in the inning, and we strand him. Still zero-zero after three, but that hit, that single by Ewing, it changed the feeling in the air. We're knocking on the door.

Innings 4-6

Top of the fourth, and the Giants finally break through. Two outs, and there's a runner on. Jonah Cox steps up and he smokes a sharp ground ball to right fielder Carson Benge. It's a single, and it's a big one. Bryce Eldridge, who was on base, sprints to third. Cox takes second on the throw. Now there are two outs, two runners in scoring position, and the Giants have the top of the order coming up. The tension is thick. And then Jung Hoo Lee, the man who made the catch in right earlier, he steps in and he delivers. He lifts a fly ball to right field, Carson Benge is there, but it's just out of reach. The ball drops, and Bryce Eldridge trots home. Jonah Cox rounds third and scores right behind him. Just like that, it's two-nothing Giants. Two runs on two hits, and the silence in the ballpark is deafening. We're down, but we're not out. That single by Cox, that was the spark for them. It set the table, and Lee cleaned it up. Bottom of the fourth, and we need an answer. Three batters come up, and we can't get anything going. The Giants pitcher is in a rhythm now, and we're swinging at his pace. Two-nothing, Giants, after four. Top of the fifth, and the Giants are looking to add on. One out, bases empty, and Drew Cavanaugh steps in. He sends a fly ball to right field, Carson Benge is tracking it, but it falls in for a single. A runner on, one out, and the Giants are threatening again. But then Drew Gilbert steps up, and our pitcher reaches back for something extra. He delivers, Gilbert swings, and it's a foul tip. The catcher holds on. Strike three. Gilbert is out, and the threat is snuffed out. That was a huge out. We needed that. The inning ends, no damage done. Two-nothing, Giants. Bottom of the fifth, and we're still searching. Three batters, no runs. The frustration is starting to build. We're getting hits, we're making contact, but we can't string anything together. Two-nothing, Giants, after five. Top of the sixth, and the Giants go down in order. Three batters, three outs. We're still in this. The score is two-nothing, and we've got three innings left to make something happen. The crowd is restless, but they haven't given up. Neither have we.

The Sequence

Bottom of the sixth, and we need a spark. Three batters come up, and we can't find one. The score is still two-nothing, and the innings are starting to slip away. We're running out of time. Top of the seventh, and the Giants go quietly. Three batters, three outs. We've got the bottom of the order coming up, and we need something, anything. Bottom of the seventh, and here we go. One out, bases empty, and Carson Benge steps in. He's been waiting for this. He sees a pitch he likes, and he drives it. A line drive, screaming into right field, Jung Hoo Lee is running, but it's over his head. It's a double. Benge is standing on second base, and the crowd is on its feet. This is it. This is the moment. We've got a runner in scoring position, and we're one hit away from breaking through. But we can't bring him home. Four batters come up in the inning, and we strand him. The frustration is palpable. Two-nothing, Giants, and we're down to our last two outs of the eighth. Top of the eighth, and the Giants go down in order. Three batters, three outs. We've got one more chance. The bottom of the eighth is here, and this is where the game is decided. Bottom of the eighth, and the ballpark is buzzing. No outs, bases empty, and Brett Baty steps in. He's been quiet all game, but he's due. The pitch comes in, and Baty swings. He gets all of it. It's a fly ball to left field, and it just keeps carrying. The left fielder is tracking it, but he's running out of room. It's gone. Home run. Baty rounds the bases, and the crowd erupts. Two-one, Giants. We're within one. The dam has broken. The inning continues. Two outs now, and there's a runner on. The Giants, they don't want any part of Juan Soto. They intentionally walk him. They'd rather face Bo Bichette with two on and two outs. The crowd boos, but we understand. They're scared. And that's when Bo Bichette steps in. He's got A.J. Ewing on second, Juan Soto on first, and the weight of the entire ballpark on his shoulders. The pitch comes in, and Bichette swings. He doesn't miss. It's a fly ball to left center field, and it's gone. Home run. A three-run shot. Ewing scores. Soto scores. Bichette scores. The ballpark is in absolute chaos. Four-two, Mets. We've taken the lead. Seven batters came up in the inning, and we scored four runs. The game has flipped on its head. Top of the ninth, and the Giants have one last chance. Three batters come up, and our pitcher slams the door. Three outs. The game is over. We've done it.

Wrap-up

Final score: San Francisco Giants two, New York Mets four. We were down two-nothing, and we stormed back. Brett Baty started it with a home run, and Bo Bichette finished it with a three-run blast. We never stopped fighting. We never gave up. And now we're walking off the field with a win. That's what this team is about. That's what this city is about. We don't quit. We fight until the last out. And tonight, we won.
