He hits a ground ball to center field, Crow-Armstrong comes up with it, but there's no play at the plate. Chourio scores, and just like that, we're tied at one apiece. The Stretch

So here we are at the stretch, and it's one to one. The first half of this ballgame turned on that bottom of the first, when Brice Turang singled to center field and Jackson Chourio came around to score. That tied it up at one, and neither side has been able to grab the lead since. It's been a pitcher's duel, a chess match, a game of inches. We need someone to step up, to make a play, to find a way to break through. The bats have been quiet, but the game is still right there. We just need one big swing, one big moment, and this one is ours for the taking.

Brice Turang comes up and grounds one through the middle, right past Crow-Armstrong in center. Chourio is off on contact, and he scores easily. Tie game, one to one. That's how you respond. The top of the second is quiet. Four Cubs come up, and none of them cross the plate. We're still knotted at one. Bottom of the second, we get three batters and nothing to show for it. Same story in the top of the third, three up, three down for Chicago. Bottom of the third, we get a little more traffic, five batters come to the plate, but we can't push a run across. After three, it's still one to one, and this one feels like it's just getting started.

Innings 4-6

The middle innings roll on, and neither side can break through. Top of the fourth, the Cubs send three batters to the plate, and we send them right back. Bottom of the fourth, we get five batters up, but the inning ends with the score still tied at one. Top of the fifth, four Cubs come up, and again, nothing. Bottom of the fifth, we get five more batters, but we just can't find that gap. Top of the sixth, three more Cubs, no runs. Bottom of the sixth, three of our guys, and the scoreboard hasn't moved. It's one to one heading into the stretch, and you can feel the tension building in the stands. Someone's going to blink, and we're hoping it's not us.

The Stretch

So here we are, six innings in, tied at one. The play that turned this half around came early, in the bottom of the first. After the Cubs grabbed that one-run lead, Jackson Chourio doubled, and then Brice Turang singled him home. That was the moment we said, not today. We answered their punch, and we've been trading blows ever since. The pitching has been sharp on both sides, and the defense has held. What we need now is that one big swing, that one break. We've got three innings left to find it, and this crowd is ready to will it into existence.
