The First Half

Ildemaro Vargas is on third, and now we've got two runners in scoring position with just one out. This is exactly the kind of start we needed. The crowd is on their feet, and we're putting the pressure on early. But then the momentum shifts. Nolan Arenado steps in with one out and two on, and he hits a ground ball to third. The Royals third baseman fields it cleanly and fires home, and Vargas is tagged out at the plate. Perdomo moves to third, but the run we wanted is gone. The air goes out of the inning just a little bit. Then Tim Tawa grounds out to the pitcher, and just like that, the inning is over. We had our chances, but we couldn't cash in. The Royals come up in the bottom of the first, and they go down in order. Four batters, no runs, and we're still tied at zero. The second inning is quick for both sides. We go three up, three down, and the Royals put together a little something in the bottom of the second. With two outs and two on, Isaac Collins grounds out to Arenado at third, and the inning is over. But a run scores on the play, and just like that, we're down one. It's a frustrating way to give up a run, but we're only down one. The third inning is more of the same. We can't get anything going, and the Royals add another one. With nobody out and nobody on, Carter Jensen steps in and launches one to right center field. It's gone. A solo shot, and we're down two. That one stings. We had the early chances, but we couldn't convert, and now we're chasing the game.

The Middle Frames

We need a spark, and we get one in the top of the fourth. Nolan Arenado leads off the inning, and he doesn't waste any time. He gets a pitch he likes and sends it deep to left field. It's gone. A solo homer, and we're on the board. The lead is cut in half, and we're right back in this thing. That's the kind of swing that can change a game. The Royals go down quietly in the bottom of the fourth, and we come back up in the fifth looking to keep the momentum going. Jordan Lawlar leads off with a sharp line drive to center field, and he's on base with nobody out. We've got a runner on, and we're trying to tie this thing up. With two outs and a runner on, Ketel Marte steps in and lines one to left field. Lawlar is off with the pitch, and he scores easily. We're tied at two. That's a huge hit, and the dugout is fired up. But the Royals answer right back. In the bottom of the fifth, they get two runners on with one out, and Bobby Witt Jr. steps to the plate. He gets a pitch he can handle, and he sends it deep to left center field. It's gone. A three-run homer, and just like that, we're down three again. That one hurt. We had tied the game, and they took it right back. We try to answer in the top of the sixth. Tim Tawa leads off with a single to center, and Arenado moves to second. We've got two on with nobody out, and we're threatening. But we can't push a run across. We leave them stranded, and we head to the stretch down three.

The Stretch

Here we are, down three, and we need something to happen. The middle innings were a roller coaster. We got the homer from Arenado, we tied it up on the Marte single, and then Bobby Witt Jr. took it all away with one swing. That was the moment the game turned. We had the momentum, and we let it slip. Now we need to find a way to get back into this thing. We need baserunners, we need a big hit, and we need it soon.

The Sequence

The game is decided here. Bottom of the sixth, we're down three, and the Royals are looking to add on. Michael Massey leads off with a line drive single to right field. A runner on, nobody out, and we need a stop. But the Royals can't push him across, and we get out of the inning without any damage. Still down three. Top of the seventh, we need a rally. Lars Nootbaar leads off and flies out sharply to center field. One down. Ildemaro Vargas singles on a ground ball through the left side. A runner on with one out, and we've got a chance. But Ketel Marte pops out to shortstop, and Geraldo Perdomo pops out to first base in foul territory. Inning over. We had a baserunner, but we couldn't do anything with him. Bottom of the seventh, the Royals go down in order. Three batters, no runs, and we're still down three. Top of the eighth, we get another chance. Nolan Arenado leads off with a line drive single to left field. A runner on, nobody out, and we need a rally. But we can't get him home. The inning ends without a run, and we're running out of time. Bottom of the eighth, the Royals go down quietly again. Three batters, no runs, and we come up for the final time. Top of the ninth, down three, and we need a miracle. Four batters come up, and we can't get anything going. The game ends, and we fall short.

Wrap-up

That's the ballgame. We had our chances early, but we couldn't cash in, and the Royals made us pay. The homer from Arenado gave us life, and the single from Marte tied it up, but Bobby Witt Jr. took it all away with one swing. We fought, but it wasn't enough. Final score, two to five. We drop this one, and we move on to the next.

The Diamondbacks come out swinging in the first. Geraldo Perdomo steps in with one out and a runner on, and he doubles on a ground ball down the left field line, past Isaac Collins. Ildemaro Vargas moves to third, and suddenly Arizona has two runners in scoring position with just one out. You can feel the tension in the air. This is the kind of moment that can set the tone for an entire ballgame, and the Diamondbacks are threatening early. But then Nolan Arenado steps up, and he hits a ground ball to third. Nick Loftin fields it, fires home to Carter Jensen, and Vargas is out at the plate. The crowd erupts. Perdomo moves to third, but the damage is limited. Two outs now, and Tim Tawa grounds out, pitcher Daniel Lynch IV to Vinnie Pasquantino at first. Inning over. No runs. We escape the first unscathed, and the score stays zero to nothing.

Bot 1

We come up in the bottom of the first, and we send four batters to the plate. Nothing doing. No runs, no drama. We go down in order, and it's back to the field with the game still tied at zero.

Top 2

Arizona sends three batters to the plate in the top of the second, and they don't get anything going. Daniel Lynch is dealing, and the Diamondbacks can't solve him. Three up, three down, and we're still tied at zero.

Bottom of the second, and we get something going. Two outs, two runners on, and Isaac Collins steps to the plate. He hits a ground ball to third, Nolan Arenado fields it and throws to Tim Tawa at first. Collins is out, but a run scores. We're on the board. One to nothing, Royals. It's not the prettiest way to score, but they all count the same, and the crowd is on its feet.

Arizona comes back up in the top of the third, and they send four batters to the plate. Still nothing. Daniel Lynch is locked in, and the Diamondbacks can't find a way through. The score stays one to nothing, Royals.

Bottom of the third, and this one's for the highlight reel. Carter Jensen steps to the plate with nobody on and nobody out, and he gets a pitch he likes. He swings, and it's gone. A fly ball to right center field, and it just keeps carrying. That ball is out of here. A solo home run for Carter Jensen, and we've got a two to nothing lead. The crowd is roaring, and Jensen is rounding the bases with a smile on his face. That's how you extend a lead.

The Diamondbacks answer in the top of the fourth. Nolan Arenado leads off the inning, and he doesn't waste any time. He gets a pitch and drives it to left field, and it's gone. A solo home run for Arenado, and just like that, the lead is cut in half. Two to one, Royals. You have to give it to him, that was a heck of a swing. But we've still got the lead, and we need to keep building on it.

Bottom of the fourth, and we send four batters to the plate. Nothing doing. We can't get anything going, and the score stays two to one. We need to answer, but the Diamondbacks are keeping us in check.

Top 5

And answer we do. Bottom of the fifth, and we've got two runners on with one out. Bobby Witt Jr. steps to the plate, and the crowd is buzzing. He gets a pitch he can handle, and he doesn't miss it. A fly ball to left center field, and it's gone. A three-run home run for Bobby Witt Jr. Isaac Collins scores, Carter Jensen scores, and Bobby is rounding the bases. Five to two, Royals. The building is shaking. That's the kind of swing that changes a ballgame, and we've got the lead back in a big way.

But we bear down. We get out of the inning without any damage, and the score stays five to two. The lead is intact, and we're heading into the later innings with a three-run cushion.

Top of the ninth, and the Diamondbacks get their last chance. Four batters come to the plate, and they can't get anything going. No runs. The game is over.

Wrap-up

That's the ballgame. Five to two, Royals. We took the lead, gave it back, and then took it right back with a swing that will be on the highlights all night.
