Our pitcher is dealing, and we're right where we need to be. Top of the second, we get four batters up, but we can't push anything across. No runs. The Tigers get their turn, and they get a runner on, but then John Peck grounds into a double play. Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar to second baseman Adael Amador to first baseman Connor Norby. Max Clark is out at second, and John Peck is out at first. That's a huge play for us. We turn the double play and get out of the inning. Scoreless. Top of the third, we get four batters up again, but nothing comes of it. The Tigers come up and they go down in order. Three batters, no runs. We're through three, and it's still zero-zero. This is a pitcher's duel, and we're just waiting for someone to break through.
Innings 4-6
Top of the fourth, we get three batters up, and we can't get anything going. No runs. The Tigers come up, and they go down in order too. Three batters, no runs. We're still tied at zero, and this game is moving fast. Both sides are locked in, and it feels like the first mistake is going to decide this thing.
The Sequence
This is where the game gets decided. Top of the fifth, and we finally break through. We load the bases with two outs, and Cole Carrigg steps in. He hits a ground ball to third baseman Kevin McGonigle, and it's a fielding error. Ezequiel Tovar scores. Jake McCarthy to third, Connor Norby to second. We take the lead, one to nothing. That's how you do it. We put pressure on them, and they cracked. We're up one, and the dugout is alive. But the Tigers answer right back. Bottom of the fifth, one out, bases empty, and Max Clark hits a fly ball to right field. It's gone. A home run. Just like that, it's tied at one. That one stings. We had the lead, and they took it right back. It's a new ballgame. Top of the sixth, we get three batters up, and we can't get anything going. No runs. And then the bottom of the sixth happens. Two outs, a runner on, and Riley Greene hits a fly ball to left fielder Jake McCarthy. It's a triple. Gleyber Torres scores. They take the lead, two to one. And then Dillon Dingler steps in, and he hits a fly ball to left field. It's gone. A home run. Riley Greene scores. Just like that, it's four to one. The bottom falls out. We go from tied to down three in the span of two swings. This one is slipping away.
Innings 7-9
Top of the seventh, we get three batters up, and we can't get anything going. No runs. The Tigers come up, and they go down in order. Three batters, no runs. We're still down four, and we need something to happen. Top of the eighth, we get four batters up, but we can't push anything across. No runs. And then the Tigers add on. Bottom of the eighth, no outs, a runner on, and Riley Greene doubles on a line drive to right fielder Mickey Moniak. Spencer Torkelson scores. It's five to one. That one hurts. We're down five now, and the mountain is getting steeper. Top of the ninth, and we're not going down without a fight. We get a runner on with two outs, and Zac Veen steps in. He hits a soft ground ball to pitcher Brant Hurter, and he beats it out. Adael Amador scores. It's five to two. We get one back, but it's not enough. The Tigers close it out, and the final is six to two.
Wrap-up
That's the ballgame. We came out swinging, we took the lead, and then it all fell apart in the sixth. The Tigers answered every time we pushed, and they pulled away. Top of the first, and the Rockies waste no time putting pressure on us. Jake McCarthy steps in with nobody out and nobody on, and he pokes a ground ball right at first baseman Colt Keith. It's a single, and just like that Colorado has a baserunner. You can feel the tension creep in early. But our defense answers the call. Hunter Goodman comes up with one out and two on, and he hits a ground ball that starts a thing of beauty. Third baseman Kevin McGonigle fields it, fires to second baseman Javier Báez, who turns and throws to first baseman Colt Keith. Double play. Cole Carrigg is out at second, Hunter Goodman is out at first. Inning over. The threat is gone, and we escape the first with the score still zero to zero. Bottom of the first, and our Tigers send three batters to the plate. Nothing doing. We go down in order, and it's still zero to zero heading to the second. Top of the second, and the Rockies are back at it. Four batters come up, but they can't push anything across. We hold them right there, and the score stays zero to zero. Bottom of the second, and we get something going. With one out and two on, John Peck steps in. He hits a ground ball to shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, who flips to second baseman Adael Amador, who fires to first baseman Connor Norby. Double play. Max Clark is out at second, John Peck is out at first. Just like that, our rally is snuffed out. You hate to see it, but the inning ends, and we're still knotted up at zero. Top of the third, and the Rockies send four more batters up. Still nothing. Our pitching is holding firm, and we get out of the inning clean. Zero to zero. Gleyber Torres scores from first, and we take a two to one lead. The place is rocking now. And then Dillon Dingler steps in. Two outs, runner on third. He gets a pitch, and he sends it. With nobody out and a runner on, Riley Greene steps in again. He hits a line drive to right fielder Mickey Moniak, and it's a double. Spencer Torkelson scores from first, and we push the lead to five to one. That's the insurance we wanted, and it feels like this one is wrapped up. Top of the ninth, and the Rockies aren't going quietly. With two outs and a runner on, Zac Veen steps in. He hits a soft ground ball to pitcher Brant Hurter, and it's a single. Adael Amador scores from second, and it's now five to two. But that's all they get. We close it out, and the final is six to two.
Wrap-up
