Bottom of the fifth, and the Giants remind us why this game is never over. With no outs and the bases empty, Andrew Knizner doubles on a sharp line drive to left field. Samad Taylor is out there, but it's hit too hard. Then things get tense. The bases get loaded, and Rafael Devers steps in. He hits a grand slam to right field. The Stretch

So here we are, at the break, and it's seven to five. We had them, we really did. That seven to one lead felt like a statement, but the Giants answered with that grand slam, and now we're in a fight. The play that turned this half, though, was Dustin Harris's single in the top of the second. We were down one, and that hit tied it up. It didn't just tie the game, it woke us up. It started the rally that put us ahead, and it gave us the confidence to pour it on in the third. Now we need to hold on. We need our pitching to lock it in, and we need our bats to give us a little more breathing room. This is the part of the game where champions are made.

Runner on second, no outs. Then things get weird. Freddy Fermin challenges a pitch result, and the call on the field is overturned. Osleivis Basabe is called out on strikes. That's a big swing. One out, runner still on second. Then Turner Hill grounds out, first baseman Jake Cronenworth to pitcher Bradgley Rodriguez, and Bryce Eldridge moves to third. Two outs, runner on third. We need this out. The Giants send four batters to the plate, and we get out of it. No runs. Still seven to five. Top of the ninth, and the Padres send three batters to the plate. No runs. We're heading to the bottom of the ninth, up by two. This is it. The Giants send six batters to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and two on, Rafael Devers walks. Final score, seven to five. The San Diego Padres take this one. It wasn't pretty, and that grand slam made it a lot closer than we wanted, but we held on.
