This is Missed It. Georgetown at William and Mary, Saturday, October twenty-fourth, with the Tribe. 63 and mostly clear at Walter J. Zable Stadium. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

Pregame

It's a crisp afternoon here as the Georgetown Hoyas roll into town to face our William and Mary Tribe. The Hoyas come in at two and four, we're sitting at three and four, and both sides know this one matters for the shape of the season. We've got the ball first, and the crowd is already buzzing, ready to see what this offense can do from the opening snap. There's something in the air today, Tribe fans. Let's get after it.

Q1

And we waste absolutely no time. First play from scrimmage, no huddle, shotgun, and King takes the handoff up the middle. He hits the hole, breaks a tackle, and suddenly he's in the open field. Sixty-eight yards. Sixty-eight yards to the house. The crowd erupts as King crosses the goal line untouched, and just like that, it's seven nothing Tribe. Lipinski's kick is true, and we've drawn first blood in about seventeen seconds of game time. Georgetown answers, though. They put together a long, patient drive, thirteen plays of grinding it out, and then Beard finds Crosby on a short right pass. Crosby makes a man miss at the twenty-five and takes it the rest of the way. Thirty yards, touchdown, and just like that we're tied at seven apiece. They answered our punch with one of their own. We get the ball back and try to respond, but the drive stalls. Five plays, and we're forced to give it up on downs. Georgetown takes over, but our defense holds firm, forcing them to turn it over on downs right back. We trade punts, neither side able to find a rhythm, and then it happens. We're driving, three plays in, and the ball comes loose. Turnover. Georgetown takes over with great field position, and they make us pay. Beard drops back, looks deep left, and finds Alexander in stride. The pass hangs up there, Alexander hauls it in at the six, and he's in. Forty-one yards, touchdown, and just like that Georgetown has taken the lead, fourteen to seven, with under a minute left in the quarter. We get the ball back, but we can't do anything with it, and the quarter ends with us trailing by a touchdown.

Q2

We start the second quarter on defense, and Georgetown is moving. Sumpter takes it up the middle for twelve yards, and then we get flagged for a personal foul, fifteen more yards, and suddenly they're deep in our territory. But our defense digs in. They force a turnover, and we take over with a chance to tie this thing. And this is where the offense starts to click. Watkins drops back, finds Blee on a short left pass, and he picks up seven yards and a first down. The chains move, the drive keeps rolling. Fourteen plays, methodical, patient, and then Chavis takes it up the middle from four yards out. He punches it in for the touchdown, Lipinski's kick is good, and we're tied at fourteen apiece. The crowd is on its feet. Georgetown gets the ball back, but our defense holds. Five plays, and they're forced to give it up on downs. We get the ball back with a chance to take the lead before the half, but we can't sustain the drive, and we punt it away. Georgetown takes over with under two minutes left, and they try to make something happen, but the clock runs out. Fourteen to fourteen at the break.

Halftime

So here we are, all tied up at fourteen. The play that turned this half was that deep ball from Beard to Alexander right before the end of the first quarter. We had just turned it over, and they made us pay for it in the worst way. Forty-one yards, and suddenly we were chasing the game. But we answered, we fought back, and we go into the locker room level. What we need in the second half is simple: keep that offensive rhythm we found in the second quarter, and make Georgetown earn every single yard. This one is far from over.

Q3

Georgetown gets the ball to start the second half, and they come out firing. Eight plays, and Beard finds Grimes on a short right pass. Grimes catches it at the four, and he's in. Eight yards, touchdown, and just like that Georgetown has the lead back, twenty-one to fourteen. They came out of the locker room with something to prove. But we answer right back. Watkins drops back, looks deep right, and finds Johnson in stride. Johnson hauls it in at the thirty, and he's gone. Fifty-two yards, touchdown, and we're right back in it. Twenty-one to twenty-one, and this place is rocking. Georgetown gets the ball back, but our defense holds, forcing them to give it up on downs. We take over, and we're moving. Four plays in, and Watkins drops back to pass. He lets it go, but Hussey steps in front of it. Interception. Hussey returns it to the twenty-nine, and just like that, the momentum shifts. Georgetown takes over, but they can't do anything with it, and they punt it back to us. We take over with under three minutes left in the third, and we start to grind. Eleven plays, chewing up clock, moving the chains, and we get all the way down to the Georgetown twenty-two. Lipinski lines up for the field goal, and he drills it. Twenty-two yards, good, and we've got the lead. Twenty-four to twenty-one, Tribe. The quarter ends with us on top.

Q4

Georgetown gets the ball to start the fourth, but our defense holds. Five plays, and they're punting it back to us. We take over with a chance to extend this lead, and this is where the game gets really interesting.

The Sequence

This is it. This is where the game gets decided. We've got the ball, we're up twenty-four to twenty-one, and we're trying to run out the clock and add some insurance. Johnson takes it left for nine yards, and we're moving. Miller gets stuffed for a loss of one, but Watkins scrambles for three yards and a first down. We're chewing clock, we're moving the chains, and Georgetown can't stop us. Fourteen plays. Fourteen plays of grinding, of patience, of keeping the ball away from their offense. And finally, we get down to the Georgetown four-yard line, and Lipinski trots out for the field goal. Twenty-two yards, and it's good. Twenty-seven to twenty-one, Tribe, with five minutes left. The crowd is sensing it. But Georgetown doesn't quit. Beard drops back, looks deep left, and finds Alexander again. Thirty yards, down to our thirty-three, and suddenly they're in business. They keep pushing, they keep fighting, but our defense holds. Fourth down, and they can't convert. We take over with under two minutes left, and all we have to do is run out the clock. We get the ball, and we try to run it. But we can't get a first down, and we're forced to punt it back to them with a minute and a half left. Georgetown takes over, and they're desperate. They drive, they move, they find a way. Eight plays, and they punch it in for the touchdown. Twenty-eight to twenty-seven, Georgetown. The lead is gone. We get the ball back with thirty-four seconds left. We need a field goal, we need something. Watkins drops back, he lets it go, and Narcisse steps in front of it. Interception. Narcisse returns it to the forty, and that's the ball game. Georgetown takes a knee, and it's over.

Wrap-up

Final score, Georgetown twenty-eight, William and Mary twenty-seven. They beat us by one. We fall to three and five, they move to three and four. It's a heartbreaker, Tribe fans. We had it, we had the lead, we had the clock, and it slipped away in the final minute. But we fight, we keep our heads up, and we get back to work. This one stings, but the season isn't over. We'll be back.

By the Numbers

The Tribe by the numbers. Final score, William and Mary 27, Georgetown 28. 352 yards of offense to their 416, 149 through the air and 203 on the ground. 19 first downs. 5 of 14 on third down. 3 turnovers for us, 2 for them. We held the ball for just over 31 minutes.
