Ole Miss at Texas

This is Missed It. Ole Miss at Texas, Saturday, October twenty-fourth, with the Rebels. 84 and mostly clear at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. You missed it? Here's the whole game, as it happened.

Pregame

It's a big one tonight, Rebel fans. We're on the road in Texas, five and one against their four and two. We've got the ball first, and the air is electric. This is the kind of game that defines a season, the kind of night you circle on the calendar. We've been rolling, and now we get to prove it against a hungry Longhorns squad on their own turf. Let's go to work.

Q1

We start with the ball, and the offense comes out feeling things out. A quick five-play drive, and we're punting it away. No harm done, but we wanted a statement. Texas takes over and grinds out a long one, twelve plays of methodical football, and they punch through a field goal to take the early lead. Three to nothing, them. We answer right back, though. Eight plays, and we drive down to get our own three. We're knotted up at three apiece, and it feels like a heavyweight fight. Then things get wild. Texas has the ball, and Manning drops back, and he lets it fly. Crawford steps in front of it. Interception. He's at the Texas thirty-three, and he brings it back a yard to the thirty-two. We've got the ball in their territory, and the crowd is roaring. This is our chance to grab control. But then, on the very next play, Chambliss drops back and throws one up. Cryer reads it all the way. He picks it off at the twenty-six and returns it fifteen yards to the forty-one. Just like that, the momentum is gone. We gave it right back. Texas punts after four plays, and we get the ball back, but we can't do anything with it. Four plays and we're turning it over on downs. The defense holds, but we're stuck in the mud. Texas takes over with just over two minutes left in the quarter, and they start to move. Brown takes the handoff, and he finds a seam on the right side. He's gone, twenty-three yards down to our two-yard line. The defense is scrambling, and you can feel the shift. They punch it in from there, and just like that, it's ten to three, them. We get the ball back with under a minute, but we're punting again. The quarter ends, and we're down by seven, but it feels like we're chasing shadows.

Q2

The second quarter starts, and Texas has the ball. They're not letting up. Manning drops back, and he sees Wingo down the middle. He lets it fly, a deep ball that hangs in the air. Wingo hauls it in at our eight, and he's got nothing but green in front of him. Fifty yards. Touchdown. The extra point is good, and we're down fourteen. That one stung. We needed a stop, and instead, they stretched the lead. We get the ball back, and we have to answer. Five plays, and we're facing a fourth down. We go for it, and we come up short. Turnover on downs. The defense is on the field again, and Texas is smelling blood. They march right down the field, eight plays, and Terry III takes it up the middle from two yards out. Touchdown. Twenty-four to three. The game is slipping away, and we can't find any traction. We punt after five plays, and Texas punts right back. We get the ball with about five and a half minutes left, and we start to move. Thirteen plays. We're driving, we're finally putting something together. Chambliss drops back, and he lets it go. But Biles is there. He steps in front of it at the two-yard line and brings it back a yard. Interception. The drive is dead, and so is our hope of cutting into the lead before the half. Texas takes a knee, and we're heading to the locker room down twenty-one.

Halftime

We're down twenty-four to three, and it feels like a mountain. The play that turned it all was that deep ball from Manning to Wingo. Fifty yards, right before we could even catch our breath. We were down ten, and we had a chance to make it a one-score game, and then that happened. Now we're chasing. We need to come out with fire, we need to force turnovers, and we need to find some rhythm on offense. This isn't over, but it's going to take everything we've got.

Q3

We need a spark, and we get one early. Texas has the ball, and Manning drops back. Purchase is in his face, he's sacked for a loss, and the ball comes out. Franklin is there to scoop it up at the goal line. Touchdown. Our defense scores. The extra point is good, and just like that, it's twenty-four to ten. The crowd is back in it, and we've got life. Texas punts after six plays, and we take over. Twelve plays. We're moving the ball, we're finding holes. Chambliss drops back, and he finds Fields on a short route to the right. Fields catches it at the goal line, six yards, touchdown. The extra point is good, and it's a seven-point game. Twenty-four to seventeen. We're right back in this thing. Texas gets the ball, and they go for it on fourth down. They come up short. We take over, but we can't convert. We punt after five plays. Texas punts right back after nine. We get the ball with ten seconds left in the quarter, and we're in business. Chambliss drops back, and he throws it deep to Fields. Fields catches it at the goal line, twenty-seven yards, touchdown. The extra point is good, and we've tied it up. Twenty-four to twenty-four. The fourth quarter is ours for the taking.

Q4

The fourth quarter starts, and we're tied. Texas has the ball, and Manning drops back. Crawford is there again. He steps in front of it at our twenty. Interception. He returns it zero yards, but it doesn't matter. We've got the ball, and we've got all the momentum. This is our chance to take the lead.

The Sequence

We take over at our own twenty, and we have to make this count. Seven plays, and we're driving. But we stall. We go for it on fourth down, and we come up short. Turnover on downs. We gave it right back, and Texas is taking over. They don't waste any time. Brown takes the handoff up the middle, and he bursts through the line. Forty-seven yards down to our thirty-two. The defense is gassed, and he's running with purpose. They keep pushing, and Manning keeps it himself, scrambling right for a yard. Touchdown. The extra point is good, and we're down seven. Twenty-four to thirty-one. We have to answer. Eight plays, and we're driving. We get down to the edge of field goal range, but it's a long one. Carneiro lines up from fifty-eight yards out. The kick is up, and it's blocked. January gets a hand on it, and it goes out of bounds at the five. We come away with nothing, and the air goes out of the building. Texas takes over, and they're chewing clock. Brown takes it left, and he picks up twenty-eight yards down to our sixteen. They're in control. They run it down to the two-minute warning, and then Spetic lines up from thirty-three yards out. It's good. Twenty-four to thirty-four. We need a miracle. We get the ball back with two and a half minutes left. Chambliss drops back, and he finds Odom over the middle. Odom catches it at the thirty-two and picks up twenty-four yards down to the twenty-two. First down. We're moving. We get down the field, and Carneiro gets a chance from closer range. He hits it. Twenty-seven to thirty-four. We're down by seven with a minute and a half left. We need an onside kick, and we need a stop. We get the ball back, but we can't get anything going. Thirteen plays, but we're running out of time. The clock hits zero, and it's over. We came all the way back, but we couldn't finish it.

Wrap-up

Final score, twenty-seven to thirty-four. We came back from twenty-one down, we tied it up, and we just couldn't get over the hump. We're five and two now, and Texas is five and two. It's a tough one to swallow, Rebel fans. We showed heart, but it wasn't enough. We'll be back.

By the Numbers

The Rebels by the numbers. Final score, Ole Miss 27, Texas 34. 363 yards of offense to their 419, 250 through the air and 113 on the ground. 23 first downs. 6 of 18 on third down. 3 turnovers for us, 3 for them. We held the ball for just over 25 minutes.
